Instrument Service Technician

General Position Summary

The instrument service technician is responsible for troubleshooting and repairing automated medical instruments used in the practice of histology, cytology and hematology.  Conducts testing, evaluation, inspection and training on various Company products. 

Essential Job Functions

Technical Repair Activities

  • Repairs medical instrumentation to manufacturer's specifications. 
  • Decontaminates and cleans biohazards from medical instruments.
  • Performs quality inspection of medical instruments to include electrical safety tests.
  • Services refrigeration systems with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency technician certification.
  • Provides technical advice to Field Service Technicians, BMET's and Technical Support Departments to aide in the troubleshooting and repair of Sakura medical instruments.
  • Evaluates and provides input to instrument repair procedures and service manuals.
  • Overnight travel may be required to perform field repairs on Company instrumentation to reduce instrument downtime.  
    Information Management & Reporting Activities
  • Documents service reports and technical advice to comply with FDA requirements.
  • Plans, coordinates and prepares technical reports as required.
  • Attends and participates in meetings, task force groups, etc., as needed. 
    Other Activities
  • May conduct training for decontamination, instrument repair and product testing for Field Service Technicians, BMETs, SFA Instrument Service Technicians and other personnel as assigned by management. Training may be at off-site locations.
  • Assures on a daily basis that all service department areas are clean, orderly, safe and in functional condition.
  • Provides input into department improvement plans, work processes and procedures.
  • Attends technical meetings and seminars when requested by management.
  • Maintains good written and verbal communications both inside and outside of the Company.
  • Performs special projects and other miscellaneous duties as directed by the department manager. 


  • Associate's degree (A.S.) in Engineering Technology; or equivalent education and experience.
  • Additional course work in instrument component repair and testing a plus.

Experience & Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of previous work experience in the repair of electro-mechanical and electronic devices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, align and repair:  solenoids, valves, motors, belt drives, film pinch rollers, conveyors, catches, air pumps, vacuum and pressure pneumatic systems, heaters, circuit boards, etc.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions in written, diagram and verbal forms.
  • Ability to maintain good customer relations.  Must be tactful and flexible with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to comply with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Ability to write service reports, instructions and technical write-ups.
  • Ability to analyze schematics.
  • Ability to effectively and concisely explain technical information and answer questions from supervisors or managers.
  • Ability to use a PC and software applications such as wordprocessing, spreadsheet, database, etc.
  • Ability to use typical office equipment such as copiers, fax machines, calculator, etc.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines and work within a budget. 

Physical Requirements & Working Environment

  • Ability to safely work with: chemicals, biohazards, hand tools, power tools and razors/cutters.
  • Ability to safely perform his or her duties according to departmental procedures.
  • Ability to frequently lift and move equipment that may weight up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely and proficiently in a repair shop with multimeter, clamp meter, tachometer, electrical safety tester, oscilloscope, hand tools, drills, bench grinders, acetylene welding torch, etc.
  • Ability to provide succinct written and verbal communication in the form of technical advice
  • Ability to travel to other locations both within and outside of the local region.  Must have a valid driver's license and access to a car.
